Where to Stay in Seattle

Seattle sits on hills between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, a compact, walkable downtown ringed by neighborhoods that each feel like their own small city. Four areas work best for visitors: the market stalls and waterfront of Downtown, the restaurants and Olympic Sculpture Park of Belltown, the coffee shops and rainbow crosswalks of Capitol Hill, and the Space Needle and Seattle Center at the foot of Queen Anne. Best time to visit
Visit between late June and September, when rainfall drops off and days are long and mild. The rest of the year is genuinely rainy — not stormy, just persistently grey and drizzly — so pack layers and a real rain jacket if you're visiting outside summer.
Renting a car
Skip the rental car for a stay in central Seattle. Downtown parking is expensive and often scarce, traffic can back up badly at rush hour, and light rail plus walking cover Downtown, Belltown, Capitol Hill, and Queen Anne well. A car only starts to make sense for day trips out to the mountains or the Olympic Peninsula.

The US dollar is the currency. Link light rail runs from Sea-Tac Airport into downtown and up through Capitol Hill, and is the easiest way in from the airport. Seattle is genuinely hilly — some walks between neighborhoods involve real climbs — and it rains on and off most of the year, so a compact umbrella or hooded jacket earns its keep.
