Where to Stay in Mykonos

Mykonos is a Cycladic island built on two identities that sit side by side: a whitewashed hilltop town of narrow lanes, windmills, and nightlife, and a coastline of organized sandy bays that range from family-calm to see-and-be-seen. It isn't a single town but a spread of distinct bases — Mykonos Town (Chora), the island's capital and main hub, with its windmills, Little Venice waterfront, and the bulk of its restaurants, shops, and clubs; and a string of beach resort areas along the south coast, from the calmer, organized bay at Ornos to the polished, celebrity-magnet sands of Psarou. Only a few areas actually work as a base for a visitor deciding where to stay. Don't miss a walk through Little Venice at sunset, when the waterfront houses catch the light, and the windmills on the hill above town, still the island's most recognizable image.

Best time to visit
Visit in May–June or September–early October. Temperatures are warm but manageable, the sea is swimmable, and both the town and beaches are noticeably less crowded and less expensive than the July–August peak, when Mykonos' clubs and beach clubs run at full capacity and room rates spike.
Renting a car
Skip a rental car if you're staying in Mykonos Town and mostly walking, bus-hopping, or taxiing to a couple of organized beaches. Consider one, or an ATV, if you want to reach quieter beaches on the north or east coast on your own schedule — buses cover the main south-coast beaches well, but taxis can be genuinely hard to find in peak season.

Greece uses the euro. Mykonos' airport (JMK) and the New Port near Tourlos connect to Mykonos Town and the beach areas by bus, taxi, or rental car — there's no rail or metro on the island. KTEL buses run frequent routes from Mykonos Town's two bus stations (Fabrika and the North station) to most beach areas, including Ornos and Platys Gialos, though services thin out late at night and off-season. Cash is still useful at smaller tavernas and for taxis, even though most hotels and restaurants take cards.

Tips

  • Book hotels and beach club sunbeds well in advance for a June–September stay — Mykonos' best-known beach clubs and its most central Chora hotels sell out weeks ahead in peak season.
  • Wear closed shoes with good grip if you're staying in Mykonos Town — the pedestrian lanes are cobbled and can get slippery, and many hotels near the center involve stairs with no elevator.
  • Confirm your hotel's shuttle or taxi arrangement before you arrive if you're staying outside Mykonos Town — taxi supply on the island is limited relative to demand, especially late at night.
