Pattaya is a beach resort city on the Gulf of Thailand in Chonburi province, roughly 150 kilometers (about a 2-hour drive) southeast of Bangkok — close enough to be a weekend trip for Bangkok residents and an easy add-on for visitors flying into Suvarnabhumi Airport. What began as a small fishing village grew rapidly from the 1960s into one of Thailand's biggest resort towns, and it now covers a stretch of coastline with a distinct character in each part: Central Pattaya and Beach Road hold the city's densest concentration of hotels, malls, and nightlife; Jomtien, just south over Pratumnak Hill, is a longer and noticeably calmer beach favored by families and long-stay visitors; and Naklua and Wong Amat, to the north, hold a quieter stretch of coast with large beachfront resorts and calmer water. The dry season (November–February) is the best time to visit, with lower humidity, minimal rain, and daytime temperatures around 23–30°C — this is also the busiest and most expensive stretch. March–May is hotter and more humid, with the sea calm but the afternoon heat intense. The rainy season runs roughly May–October, with September and October the wettest months; showers are usually short, and hotel rates drop noticeably in this period.
Renting a car
Not necessary for a stay focused on Central Pattaya, Jomtien, or Naklua — baht buses and Grab cover the main beach corridor well. A rental car or scooter becomes more useful for day trips outside the city (to Sriracha, Ban Amphur, or inland attractions), though the same licensing rules apply as elsewhere in Thailand: a motorcycle-endorsed license plus an International Driving Permit for a scooter.

Thailand uses the baht (฿). Pattaya has no metro or skytrain — the main way to get around within the city is the baht bus (songthaew), a shared pickup-truck taxi that runs a fixed counter-clockwise loop along Beach Road, Second Road, and Sukhumvit Road for a flat fare (10–20 baht depending on the route); flag one down, ride it, and press the buzzer to get off. Grab and metered taxis cover point-to-point trips, including to Jomtien and Naklua. Most visitors arrive via Suvarnabhumi Airport, about 1.5–2 hours away by road; the smaller U-Tapao International Airport is closer (around 30–45 minutes) but serves far fewer routes.

Tips

  • Baht buses only follow their fixed loop route for the flat fare — asking the driver to detour to a specific address turns it into a private hire at a much higher, negotiated price.
  • Beach Road and Walking Street are loud well into the night — if you want a quiet stay, book a hotel set back from Beach Road, or stay in Jomtien or Naklua instead.
  • U-Tapao Airport is closer to Pattaya than Suvarnabhumi, but check your route options first — far fewer airlines fly there, so most travelers still land in Bangkok.
