Krabi is a coastal province on Thailand's Andaman coast, known for sheer limestone karst cliffs, more than 150 islands, and a slower pace than nearby Phuket. Unlike an island destination with one obvious base, Krabi's tourist life is split between a handful of distinct spots: Ao Nang, a road-connected beach town with the widest choice of hotels and restaurants, and Railay Beach, a small boat-only peninsula famous for rock climbing and dramatic cliff scenery just south of it. Krabi Town, the provincial capital further inland along the Krabi River, is mainly a transport and market hub rather than a beach base. This guide covers the two areas that work best for a visitor's stay — Ao Nang for convenience and choice, Railay for scenery and a quieter, car-free feel.

The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit, with sunny days, calmer seas, and good visibility for the karst islands around Ao Nang and Railay — December through February is the busiest and most expensive stretch. The southwest monsoon (roughly May–October) brings afternoon rain and rougher seas that can cancel or delay longtail boats to Railay and the outlying islands; September and October are typically the wettest months.
Renting a car
A car or scooter is useful if you're based in Ao Nang and want to explore Krabi Town, viewpoints, or other beaches along the coast — renting one requires a motorcycle-endorsed license plus an International Driving Permit if you're riding a scooter. It's irrelevant in Railay, though: there's no road onto the peninsula, so nothing you rent in Ao Nang can be driven there.

Thailand uses the baht (฿). Most visitors arrive by air into Krabi International Airport, around 30–40 minutes by road from Ao Nang, or by ferry or speedboat from Phuket, which takes roughly 1.5–2 hours to reach Ao Nang or Railay directly. Ao Nang and Krabi Town are connected by road, served by songthaews, Grab, and taxis, but Railay has no road access at all — it sits on a peninsula cut off by limestone cliffs, so every trip in or out is by longtail boat, usually from Ao Nang's beach or from Krabi Town's pier.

Tips

  • If you're staying in Railay, factor boat timing into your plans — longtail boats to and from Ao Nang or Krabi Town stop running by early evening and can pause altogether in rough weather during the May–October monsoon.
