Where to Stay in George Town

George Town is the capital of Penang island and Malaysia's best-preserved historic port city — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, built on more than two centuries of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and British colonial trading history. Its heritage core is a compact grid of shophouses, clan temples, mosques, and street art that's genuinely walkable, unlike most Malaysian city centers, and it's also one of the country's best food cities, with hawker dishes found nowhere else quite the same way. The two bases are the heritage core itself and Gurney Drive, the modern seafront strip just outside it.

Best time to visit
George Town is warm and humid year-round. December to March tends to be the driest stretch, while October to November brings the heaviest rain as part of the northeast monsoon. Avoid late January to mid-February if you'd rather skip Chinese New Year's crowds, though the city's lion dances and lantern displays are also one of its best times to visit.
Renting a car
Skip a car for the heritage core itself — its narrow one-way streets and scarce parking make walking or Grab easier. A car (or scooter) becomes genuinely useful if you're also heading out to Batu Ferringhi's beaches or around the rest of the island.

Malaysia uses the ringgit (RM). The heritage core is walkable and served by a free CAT (Central Area Transit) shuttle bus; Grab covers the rest of the island cheaply. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) when visiting mosques and temples, and remove your shoes before entering one.
