Agra exists, for most visitors, for one building: the Taj Mahal, the marble mausoleum Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, completed in the mid-1600s. Most visitors stay a single night — long enough to catch the Taj at sunrise or sunset, when the crowds thin and the light is best, plus Agra Fort and the ruined city of Fatehpur Sikri nearby. It's usually the second stop on a Golden Triangle trip, between Delhi and Jaipur.

India uses the rupee. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Buy tickets online in advance to skip the queue, and go at sunrise if you can — it's both the best light and the thinnest crowds. Only electric vehicles or walking are allowed in the immediate vicinity of the monument, to protect the marble from vehicle pollution.
