Where to Stay in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen grew from a small fishing village and Cozumel ferry port into the Riviera Maya's most walkable beach town, anchored by Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), a pedestrian corridor of shops, restaurants, and bars running parallel to the beach for more than two kilometers. It's the seat of the municipality of Solidaridad, about an hour south of Cancún International Airport, and functions as the region's main jumping-off point for day trips to Cozumel, Tulum, and the cenotes of the Yucatán interior. South of downtown, the gated resort community of Playacar offers a quieter, golf-and-beach alternative to the avenue's nightlife.
