Where to Stay in Antalya

Antalya is Turkey's main Mediterranean beach destination, a city of roughly 1.3 million people wrapped around a small Roman-era harbor with the Taurus Mountains rising directly behind it. Most visitors split between two very different bases: Kaleiçi, the walled old town of restored Ottoman houses just above the marina, and Lara, the long sandy beach strip east of the center lined with large resort hotels. The two are about 20 minutes apart by tram or taxi and cover most of what draws people to the city — history and atmosphere in one, beach and pools in the other.

Visit in April–May or late September–October for warm weather without the peak-summer heat and crowds. June through August is hot, humid, and the most expensive and booked-out stretch of the year; winter stays mild by European standards but many beach resorts scale back or close.
Renting a car
Skip the rental car if you're staying in one base and mostly relaxing at your hotel or in Kaleiçi's old town — parking in Kaleiçi is tight and most Lara resorts are walkable to their own beach and pools. Consider one if you plan day trips along the coast (Side, Perge, Termessos) or between Kaleiçi and Lara without relying on taxis.

Useful travel information

Turkey uses the Turkish lira. Antalya's tram (Antray) and bus network run on the rechargeable Antalyakart, sold at kiosks and machines at major stops — buy one on arrival rather than paying cash fares. The tram connects Lara to the city center and Kaleiçi's edge, though it doesn't reach every resort directly, so many Lara hotels are still a taxi or shuttle ride from the tram line. Antalya Airport (AYT) sits between the two areas, roughly 15 minutes from Lara and 25–30 minutes from Kaleiçi by taxi.

Tips

  • Buy an Antalyakart at the airport or a tram stop on arrival — it covers trams and most city buses at a fraction of a cash fare.
  • If you're staying in Lara without direct beach access, ask your hotel about shuttle timing to its private beach before booking — some resorts are a short walk, others a longer shuttle ride.
  • Visit Kaleiçi's Hadrian's Gate and harbor in the early morning or after sunset in high season — midday brings the heaviest tour-group and cruise-passenger traffic.
