Where to Stay in Cologne

Cologne is built around its cathedral — the twin spires of the Kölner Dom dominate the skyline from almost everywhere in the city center, and the old town's narrow lanes, riverside promenade, and Kölsch beer halls all sit within easy walking distance of it. Nearly all of the Altstadt you see today is a careful postwar reconstruction, since Allied bombing destroyed roughly 90% of the historic center — but the rebuilt medieval street plan and the colorful gabled houses at the Fischmarkt still make it feel centuries old. Beyond the old town, the city spreads into distinct neighborhoods worth a stay of their own, from the bohemian Belgian Quarter to Deutz on the Rhine's far bank, which has the best postcard view of the cathedral there is.

Visit in late spring (May–June) or early fall (September) for mild weather and fewer crowds than summer. Germany uses the euro. The KVB Stadtbahn (light rail/U-Bahn) and buses cover the whole city, and a day ticket usually pays for itself after a few rides. Kölsch, the local beer, is served in small 0.2-liter glasses on a tray — a waiter (Köbes) keeps bringing fresh ones until you place a coaster on top of your glass to signal you're done. Many smaller shops and cafés are still cash-preferred, so carry some euros.
