The UAE dirham (AED) is the currency, and English is used everywhere from menus to street signs. The metro and tram network is clean, cheap, and air-conditioned, and ride-hailing apps like Careem and Uber are widely used and inexpensive. Dubai is very safe day or night. Dress is relaxed at hotels, beaches, and malls, but more modest in Old Dubai and at any mosque you visit.

Tips

  • Buy a rechargeable Nol card for the metro and tram — it's far cheaper than taxis for getting between Downtown and the Marina.
  • Book the Burj Khalifa's 'At the Top' observation deck online, days ahead if you can. Sunset slots sell out first and cost more than daytime ones.
