Puerto Vallarta grew from a small fishing and silver-shipping port on Mexico's Pacific coast into one of the country's most visited resort cities, helped along by the international press attention that followed the 1963 filming of John Huston's "The Night of the Iguana" nearby. The city wraps around Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay), one of the largest bays in North America, with the Sierra Madre foothills rising directly behind the Malecón boardwalk and the red-tile rooftops of the historic center. South of the Río Cuale, the cobblestone streets of Zona Romántica have grown into one of Mexico's most prominent LGBTQ+-friendly neighborhoods, while Marina Vallarta and the Hotel Zone to the north concentrate the city's beachfront resorts.

Best time to visit
Visit between November and April for the driest, warmest weather and the lowest humidity — this is also high season, so book hotels early. Late April through June brings hotter, more humid weather with thinner crowds; July through October is the rainy and Pacific hurricane season, with afternoon storms common.
Renting a car
Skip the rental car for a stay inside the city — Zona Romántica and El Centro are walkable, and buses and taxis cover the rest. Consider one only for day trips outside town, such as to Sayulita or San Sebastián del Oeste.

The R-1 and R-2 city buses run along Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio and into El Centro and Zona Romántica and are the cheapest way to get around; taxis here don't use meters, so agree a fare before getting in.
