Where to Stay in San Francisco

San Francisco packs a lot into about 120 square kilometers: cable cars climbing impossibly steep hills, fog rolling through the Golden Gate Bridge's towers, and a different neighborhood character every few blocks. Four areas work best for visitors — the department stores and cable car lines of Union Square, the sea lions and piers of Fisherman's Wharf, the grand hotels and views of Nob Hill, and the Italian cafes of North Beach. Don't miss a ride on the Powell-Hyde cable car, a walk (or drive) down the switchbacks of Lombard Street, and a boat out to Alcatraz Island.

The US dollar is the currency. The Muni system of buses, streetcars, and cable cars covers the central neighborhoods, and BART connects downtown to the airport. San Francisco is hilly — some walks between neighborhoods involve real climbs, so pace yourself or take the cable car instead.
