Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah and the main gateway to Malaysian Borneo — a coastal city built around the South China Sea, with Mount Kinabalu visible on clear days and a scatter of coral-reef islands a short boat ride from downtown. It's less about a single old town than Kuala Lumpur, Penang, or Malacca, and more a base for beach time, island-hopping, and trips into the rainforest.
