Jodhpur is built around Mehrangarh Fort, one of India's largest hill forts, with the old city's blue-painted houses spreading out below its walls. The nickname "Blue City" comes from the indigo wash traditionally used on old-city homes, originally to keep them cool and repel insects. Most visitors split their time between the fort and old city — narrow lanes, the Ghanta Ghar clock tower, and Sardar Market — and the newer, greener districts further out, where heritage havelis-turned-hotels sit on quieter streets.
