Where to Stay in Bariloche

San Carlos de Bariloche, usually just called Bariloche, sits on the southern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi in Argentina's Río Negro province, backed by the Andes and surrounded by Nahuel Huapi National Park. It's the main gateway to Argentina's Patagonian lake district — a base for lake excursions, forest drives, chocolate shops, and, in winter, skiing at nearby Cerro Catedral. Downtown centers on the stone-and-shingle Centro Cívico and Mitre street's restaurants and chocolatiers, while a scenic lakeside drive west of town, Circuito Chico, threads past viewpoints and Bariloche's most famous hotel on the Llao Llao peninsula.

Best time to visit
Bariloche has four distinct seasons. December–February (Southern Hemisphere summer) brings warm days for hiking and lake activities and is the busiest, priciest stretch, especially around the January holidays. June–August is ski season at Cerro Catedral, with cold temperatures and snow in town some years. The shoulder months of April–May and September–November tend to bring fewer crowds, lower prices, and (in autumn) the region's noticeably colorful foliage.
Renting a car
You don't need a car to enjoy downtown Bariloche itself — it's walkable, and local buses cover the rest of the city. A car (or an organized tour) becomes genuinely useful if you want to drive the Circuito Chico loop at your own pace, reach Cerro Catedral or more distant viewpoints independently, or explore beyond what bus line 20 covers along Avenida Bustillo.

Useful travel information

Argentina uses the Argentine peso; the exchange rate has been volatile, so paying in cash sometimes gets a better rate than a card at the official bank rate — check current advice before you travel. Spanish is the local language; English is common in hotels and tour operators but less so elsewhere. Bariloche is a well-known chocolate-producing town — several long-established chocolatiers line Mitre street downtown. Cerro Catedral, one of South America's largest ski resorts, sits roughly 19 km from downtown and runs a regular shuttle bus in winter.

  • If you're staying downtown and want to see Circuito Chico, bus line 20 runs from the terminal along Avenida Bustillo to Puerto Pañuelo roughly every 20 minutes — it covers much of the route, though not the full loop.
  • Book lake-view or Llao Llao-area rooms well ahead for January and July, Argentina's main domestic holiday periods, when the town fills up.
  • Pack layers regardless of season — weather changes quickly this close to the Andes, even in summer.
