Where to Stay in Heraklion

Heraklion is Crete's capital and largest city, a working port town built around a compact Venetian-era old town rather than a resort strip. The Koules Fortress guards the entrance to the old harbour, Lion Square (officially Plateia Venizelou) centers on the Venetian-era Morosini Fountain, and the pedestrianized 25 August Street connects the two past the Venetian Loggia and Agios Titos church. The Archaeological Museum, one of Greece's most important, holds the best collection of Minoan artifacts anywhere, and it's the natural gateway for a day trip to the Palace of Knossos, the Bronze Age Minoan site about 5km southeast of the center. The old town is genuinely the only area in Heraklion itself that makes sense to base yourself in.

Visit in spring (April–June) or fall (September–October), when temperatures are comfortable and the old town is less crowded. July and August bring intense heat, often above 33°C, and the busiest cruise-ship days can fill Lion Square and the harbour with day-trippers by mid-morning.
Renting a car
Skip the rental car if you're staying in the old town. Streets are narrow and largely pedestrianized, parking is limited, and the old town's sights are all walkable. A car (or the city bus) only becomes useful for the Knossos day trip or exploring further afield in Crete.

Greece uses the euro. Heraklion International Airport (Nikos Kazantzakis) sits about 5km east of the center, with buses and taxis running downtown. The old town is small enough to see entirely on foot, and city buses (including line 2 to Knossos) run from the main bus terminal near the port. Heraklion is generally safe for visitors; the busiest pickpocket risk is in crowds around Lion Square and the harbour on cruise-ship days.

Tips

  • Buy Knossos tickets online in advance, especially in summer, and go early or late in the day to avoid the heat and the tour-bus crowds.
