Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands off Malaysia's northwest coast, duty-free and built around a mix of beach resorts, rainforest-covered limestone hills, and the cable car and Sky Bridge above Gunung Mat Cincang. Unlike Malaysia's heritage cities, this is a resort island — most visitors base themselves on one beach strip and day-trip from there. The main bases are Pantai Cenang, the main tourist beach, which runs into quieter Pantai Tengah; Kuah, the island's main town and ferry gateway; and Datai Bay, the island's exclusive luxury enclave in the northwest.
