Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, Ontario sits directly across the gorge from Niagara Falls, New York, and it's the Canadian side that gets the famous view — a bend in the river puts Horseshoe Falls square in front of you, something the American side can't offer. Almost every visitor's trip centers on one compact, walkable strip above the gorge: the high-rise hotels of Fallsview looking straight down onto the falls, and the neon-lit entertainment strip of Clifton Hill running downhill toward the water. Nearly everything worth doing on a short trip — Table Rock, the Skylon Tower, Fallsview Casino Resort, and the boat tours that sail right up to the base of the falls — sits within a 15-20 minute walk of this core.

Best time to visit
Visit in May–June or September–October for milder weather and shorter lines than peak summer. July and August are the busiest and priciest months, but also when every attraction, including the boat tours, runs full hours. Winter has its own appeal — the falls partly freeze over and the Winter Festival of Lights runs from November through January — but expect real cold and reduced attraction hours.
Renting a car
A car isn't needed for a trip based around Fallsview and Clifton Hill — the Falls, Clifton Hill, and the Fallsview hotels are within walking distance of each other, and the WEGO bus covers the Niagara Parkway attractions further out. A car becomes useful mainly for day trips to Niagara-on-the-Lake or the wider wine region.

Where to stay

Best for first-time visitors, couples, and families who want to be within walking distance of the falls and don't mind a lively, commercial strip around them. Families do especially well here given how much of Clifton Hill — mini-golf, arcades, the SkyWheel — is built for kids.

The Canadian dollar is the currency. The WEGO bus system connects Fallsview/Clifton Hill with the Niagara Parkway attractions and Niagara-on-the-Lake, and is the easiest way to get around without a car. Anyone crossing from the US side over the Rainbow Bridge needs a passport or other WHTI-compliant ID. Fallsview and Clifton Hill are busy, well-lit, and generally safe at most hours, with the usual big-city caution around late-night crowds.
