Where to Stay in Miami

Miami is a beach city with a skyline, and a Latin American crossroads with some of the best Cuban coffee outside Havana. Four neighborhoods work best for visitors: the Art Deco hotels and sand of South Beach, the glass towers and bay views of Brickell, the mural-covered warehouses of Wynwood, and the leafy, laid-back streets of Coconut Grove. Each is walkable on its own, even though the city as a whole is spread out. Don't miss the pastel hotels of Ocean Drive, the outdoor murals of Wynwood Walls, and Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, an early-1900s Italian Renaissance-style villa on Biscayne Bay.

Best time to visit
Visit between December and April. The weather is warm and dry, without the summer's heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms — this is also when hotel rates run highest, so book ahead.
Renting a car
You don't need a car within any one neighborhood, but getting between South Beach, Brickell, Wynwood, and Coconut Grove is easier with one — Miami's public transit doesn't connect them well. Rent one only if you're planning to cover multiple areas in a day or head out toward the Everglades.

Useful travel information

The US dollar is the currency. The free Metromover loop covers Downtown and Brickell, but it doesn't reach South Beach, Wynwood, or Coconut Grove — rideshare is the easiest way to move between these neighborhoods. Hurricane season runs June through November; most visits are unaffected, but check the forecast if you're traveling then.
