Where to Stay in Eger

Eger is a small town in northern Hungary built around a hilltop castle, a Baroque old town, and a wine valley just outside it. Everything a visitor comes for sits within a compact, walkable core: the 13th-century castle where a heavily outnumbered Hungarian garrison famously held off an Ottoman siege in 1552, the tall Ottoman-era minaret a few streets below it, Dobó tér's cluster of Baroque churches and the Town Hall, and the domed Basilica, Hungary's second-largest church. What makes Eger worth an overnight stay rather than a rushed day trip from Budapest is what's just past the old town's edge: Szépasszony-völgy, the Valley of the Beautiful Women, where roughly 200 small wine cellars are cut into the hillside in a horseshoe curve, many still pouring the local Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood) red on the spot.
