Where to Stay in Alicante

Alicante is the main city of the Costa Blanca, built around a natural harbor on Spain's southeastern coast, with a hilltop castle, a palm-lined seafront promenade, and a city beach all within easy walking distance of each other. Santa Bárbara Castle, eleven centuries old, sits atop Mount Benacantil and looks down over the old town, the marina, and Postiguet Beach right at the city's edge. Don't miss the castle itself, reachable by a fast elevator carved into the rock, and the Explanada de España, a nearly 600-meter promenade paved with a wave-patterned mosaic of six and a half million tiles. A short tram ride north, Playa de San Juan adds several kilometers of open, sandy beach for anyone who wants more than an afternoon by the water.

Best time to visit
Visit May through September for the warmest, sunniest weather — Alicante gets only around twenty days of rain a year — though this is also the busiest and priciest stretch. Late June brings Hogueras de San Juan, Alicante's biggest festival, with bonfire monuments burned across the city; lively to be part of, but hotel rates rise and the center gets crowded for it.
Renting a car
Skip the rental car if you're staying near the center. El Barrio's streets are narrow and largely pedestrian, parking downtown is limited, and the TRAM already connects the center to Playa de San Juan directly. A car is only useful for day trips further up or down the Costa Blanca coast.

Useful travel information

Spain uses the euro. Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is about 12km southwest of the center; the C6 bus runs downtown in around 25–30 minutes and connects with the TRAM network, or a taxi takes about 15–20 minutes. The TRAM (lines 1, 3, and 4) covers the city center and runs up the coast to Playa de San Juan in about 20–25 minutes. The old town and Explanada are an easy walk from each other, and Alicante is generally safe, with the usual pickpocket caution on crowded beaches and trams in summer.

Tips

  • Take the elevator up to Santa Bárbara Castle rather than walking — it's a fast, minute-long ride through a tunnel cut into the rock, and it drops you right at the fortress grounds with sweeping coastal views.
  • If you're around in late June, check the Hogueras de San Juan schedule before booking — it's a genuinely fun week of bonfires and fireworks, but hotel rates rise and the old town gets busy for it.
  • Ride the TRAM up the coast to Playa de San Juan for a full beach day — it's a longer, wider stretch of sand than the city's own Postiguet Beach, and the tram ride itself runs right along the water.
