Maastricht is the Netherlands' oldest city, tucked into the country's southern tip where it borders both Belgium and Germany. Its Roman-era origins and centuries as a fortified border city left it with a compact old center of cobbled squares, church towers, and one of the country's few remaining medieval city walls, all wrapped in a noticeably Burgundian food-and-cafe culture that feels closer to Liège or Aachen than to Amsterdam. Renting a car
Skip a rental car for a stay centered on the old town. The Binnenstad's streets are narrow, largely pedestrianized, and easiest covered on foot, and Wyck is a short walk across the river. A car only helps for day trips into the surrounding Limburg countryside.
