Where to Stay in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires spreads out in a grid of European-influenced barrios, each with its own character, wrapped around the muddy Río de la Plata. Wide boulevards like Avenida 9 de Julio and the Obelisco anchor the center, but the neighborhoods that matter most to a first visit sit further out: elegant Recoleta, home to the city's most famous cemetery and its Belle Époque mansions; Palermo, the sprawling, leafy district of parks, restaurants, and nightlife informally split into Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood; cobblestoned San Telmo, the old colonial core turned antiques-and-tango quarter; and Puerto Madero, the youngest of the four, a redeveloped dockside strip of glass towers and converted brick warehouses.

Argentina's seasons run opposite the Northern Hemisphere's, so Buenos Aires is mildest in spring (September–November) and fall (March–May), when days are warm and evenings comfortable for the city's late-night dinner culture. Summer (December–February) gets hot and humid, and many locals leave the city for the coast in January. Winter (June–August) is mild by international standards but can feel damp and gray.
Renting a car
Skip the rental car for time spent in the city itself. Traffic is heavy and can be aggressive by international standards, parking is scarce and often expensive in Recoleta, Palermo, and San Telmo, and the Subte (metro), buses, and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Cabify cover the neighborhoods here well. A car makes more sense only if you're heading out of the city, for example toward the Tigre Delta or the Pampas.

Argentina uses the Argentine peso, and the exchange rate has been volatile in recent years — paying in cash, including US dollars, or through services like Western Union sometimes gets a notably better rate than a card does at the official bank rate, so it's worth checking current advice before you travel. Dinner runs late: many restaurants don't fill up until 9 or 10pm, and after-dinner outings can start well past midnight. Tipping around 10% at restaurants is customary but not always automatic. Spanish is the local language, spoken with the distinctive Rioplatense accent and the "vos" form; English is common in hotels and tourist-facing businesses in the main tourist neighborhoods.
