Where to Stay in San Telmo, Buenos Aires

San Telmo is Buenos Aires's oldest neighborhood, a grid of narrow cobblestone streets and low colonial-era buildings that largely escaped the wave of demolition that reshaped the rest of the city center in the early 20th century. Its social and commercial heart is Plaza Dorrego, ringed by cafés and bars and taken over every Sunday by the Feria de San Telmo, a sprawling antiques and crafts market that runs the length of Calle Defensa. Tango has deep roots here, and it's still common to see dancers performing outdoors around the plaza on weekend afternoons.

What it's actually like to stay here

Bohemian and a little rough around the edges by day, with antique shops, art galleries, and tango bars tucked into converted colonial houses; on Sundays the Feria de San Telmo fills Calle Defensa with stalls and crowds for most of the day.

Best for first-time visitors and architecture fans who want to stay somewhere with real history underfoot, and for travelers who'd rather spend on experiences than on a five-star room.

Consider Recoleta or Puerto Madero instead if a polished, upmarket feel matters more to you than character and history — San Telmo's buildings and streets are atmospheric rather than pristine, and some blocks feel distinctly unpolished after dark.

Transportation & practical information

The closest Subte stations — Independencia and San Juan, both on Line C — sit roughly a 10 to 15-minute walk from Plaza Dorrego; many visitors instead walk in from the Centro Histórico or take a short taxi or ride-share.

Skip the rental car for time spent in the city itself. Traffic is heavy and can be aggressive by international standards, parking is scarce and often expensive in Recoleta, Palermo, and San Telmo, and the Subte (metro), buses, and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Cabify cover the neighborhoods here well. A car makes more sense only if you're heading out of the city, for example toward the Tigre Delta or the Pampas.
