Where to Stay in Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires

Puerto Madero is Buenos Aires's youngest neighborhood by far — a set of 19th-century brick dock warehouses that sat abandoned for decades after the port silted up, redeveloped from the 1990s onward into the city's most modern district. The old docks survive as a pedestrian promenade lined with restaurants, crossed by Santiago Calatrava's white, sail-like Puente de la Mujer footbridge, while a wall of glass residential and office towers has grown up on the east side of the water. It's flanked by the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, a large protected wetland that's an easy add-on for a morning walk.

What it's actually like to stay here

Polished, modern, and noticeably quiet after dark compared with the rest of the city center — this is corporate and residential Buenos Aires, not its nightlife district, though the dockside restaurant strip stays busy through dinner.

Best for couples wanting a modern, upmarket stay with genuine river views and a safe, quiet feel at night, and for travelers prioritizing new hotel stock over historic character.

Stay elsewhere if

Walkability
Walkable along its own dockside promenade, which is flat, well-lit, and pleasant to stroll — but the neighborhood is cut off from the rest of the city center by a wide avenue and the old rail yards, so reaching San Telmo, the Centro, or Retiro on foot isn't realistic.
Noise at night
Quiet, especially at night — this is one of the calmest areas covered here after dark, dockside restaurants aside.

Transportation & practical information

Puerto Madero has no Subte station of its own — the closest stops are Line B's L. N. Alem and Line D's Catedral, each roughly a 10 to 15-minute walk from the docks — so most visitors get around by taxi, ride-hailing, or on foot along the waterfront itself.

Skip the rental car for time spent in the city itself. Traffic is heavy and can be aggressive by international standards, parking is scarce and often expensive in Recoleta, Palermo, and San Telmo, and the Subte (metro), buses, and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Cabify cover the neighborhoods here well. A car makes more sense only if you're heading out of the city, for example toward the Tigre Delta or the Pampas.
