Osaka is Japan's food capital and its most easygoing big city — locals are known nationwide for being more direct and casual than in Tokyo or Kyoto, and the city's food culture reflects that same unpretentious energy. It's just 15 minutes from Kyoto by train, which makes it an easy add-on to a Kansai itinerary or a base in its own right. A handful of neighborhoods work best for visitors. Japan uses the yen. Osaka's subway network, plus JR loop and private lines, covers every central neighborhood, and a Suica, Pasmo, or the local Icoca IC card works across all of them. Osaka is generally very safe, including at night.

  • Try a takoyaki or okonomiyaki stall in Dotonbori rather than a sit-down restaurant — some of the best versions in the city are sold from small street-food counters.
  • If you're also visiting Kyoto, note the Shinkansen and regular JR trains between the two cities take as little as 15 minutes — an easy day trip either way.
