Where to Stay in Heraklion Old Town, Heraklion

Heraklion Old Town is the compact Venetian-era core built around the old harbour and Lion Square, officially Plateia Venizelou. The Koules Fortress guards the harbour entrance, and the pedestrianized 25 August Street runs from Lion Square past the Venetian Loggia and the church of Agios Titos down to the water. Handakos Street and the surrounding lanes hold most of the old town's restaurants, bars, and shops, and the Archaeological Museum sits a short walk east of the square, with the bus terminal for Knossos nearby the port.

What it's actually like to stay here

A genuine working city center rather than a tourist set piece — souvenir shops and cafes around Lion Square give way to everyday shops, bakeries, and local bars a couple of streets back. It's busiest by day, especially when cruise ships are in port, and settles into a more local, restaurant-and-bar evening scene along Handakos Street after dark.

Best for first-time visitors and architecture lovers who want the fortress, the fountain, and the main museums all within a short walk, and for couples who want harbourside tavernas and old-town lanes without needing a car.

Stay elsewhere if

There isn't a genuine alternative base within Heraklion itself — this is the only part of the city with real walkable tourist infrastructure. Travelers who want a beach right outside their hotel should look at a different Cretan town, since Heraklion's own beaches sit outside the city center.

Transportation & practical information

The main KTEL bus terminal, near the old harbour, connects to Knossos (line 2) and the rest of Crete. Heraklion International Airport is about 5km east, roughly a 15-20 minute taxi or bus ride, and the port handles both ferries and cruise ships.

Skip the rental car if you're staying in the old town. Streets are narrow and largely pedestrianized, parking is limited, and everything in this guide is walkable. A car (or the city bus) only becomes useful for the Knossos day trip or exploring further afield in Crete.
