El Centro is Puerto Vallarta's historic downtown core on the north bank of the Río Cuale, home to the Malecón boardwalk and the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose wrought-iron crown is the city's most recognizable landmark. Narrow streets climb from the waterfront into the hillside Gringo Gulch neighborhood, and the district's own beach, Playa Camarones, sits at its northern edge toward the Hotel Zone.

A mix of cobblestone shopping streets, art galleries, and traditional cantinas by day, with the Malecón's sculptures, street performers, and restaurant patios busiest around sunset.

Transportation & practical information

Buses along the coastal boulevard reach Marina Vallarta, the Hotel Zone, and the airport; Zona Romántica is a 10-15 minute walk south across the Río Cuale.

Skip the rental car for a stay inside the city — Zona Romántica and El Centro are walkable, and buses and taxis cover the rest. Consider one only for day trips outside town, such as to Sayulita or San Sebastián del Oeste.
