The Altstadt is Cologne's historic core, wrapped around the cathedral and the Rhine promenade. Nearly all of it is a careful postwar reconstruction — Allied bombing leveled about 90% of the district by 1945 — but the rebuilt medieval street plan, the colorful gabled houses at the Fischmarkt, and squares like Alter Markt still give it an old-town feel. It's also the heart of Cologne's Kölsch beer culture, with traditional breweries and beer halls on nearly every corner.

Transportation & practical information

Everything in the district is walkable. Köln Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) and the Dom/Hbf Stadtbahn stop sit right at the cathedral's edge, connecting to the rest of the city.

Skip renting a car. The Altstadt's streets are narrow and largely pedestrianized, parking is scarce and expensive, and the Stadtbahn covers the central neighborhoods.
