Deutz sits on the Rhine's right bank, directly across from the old town, and is the only district on that side of the river officially counted as part of Cologne's center. It's more modern and spread out than the Altstadt, built up around the Koelnmesse trade fair grounds and the Lanxess Arena, but its real draw is the Rheinboulevard — a tiered riverside promenade with the best view of the cathedral skyline in the city.

Calmer and more modern than the old town, mixing trade-fair business bustle near Koelnmesse with a relaxed, riverside park-and-café scene along the Rheinboulevard and Rheinpark.

Transportation & practical information

Köln Messe/Deutz station has S-Bahn, regional, and ICE trains, plus Stadtbahn lines into the center. The Hohenzollernbrücke footbridge puts the cathedral about a 10-minute walk away.

Skip renting a car. The Altstadt's streets are narrow and largely pedestrianized, parking is scarce and expensive, and the Stadtbahn covers the central neighborhoods.
