Mykonos Town, known locally as Chora, is the island's capital and its most walkable base — a maze of narrow, whitewashed pedestrian lanes climbing from the old harbor. On the hill above town stand the five windmills of Kato Mili, the island's best-known landmark, and just below them, Little Venice, a row of 18th-century houses with wooden balconies built directly over the water. Chora holds the bulk of the island's restaurants, jewelry and fashion boutiques, and its late-night bar and club scene, concentrated in the lanes around Matogianni Street and the Little Venice waterfront.

What it's actually like to stay here

Busy and social from late afternoon through the early morning, with the pedestrian lanes filling up for dinner and staying loud well past midnight around the bar streets and Little Venice. Quieter in the morning, when the shops are still opening and the crowds haven't arrived yet.

Best for first-time visitors and couples who want the most central, walkable base — windmills, Little Venice, and the island's restaurant and nightlife scene all within a short walk of most hotels.

Stay elsewhere if

Consider Ornos or Psarou instead if you want a quiet night's sleep, direct beach access, or easy luggage logistics — Chora has no swimmable beach in the center, gets genuinely loud late at night in peak season, and its stepped, cobbled lanes make wheeled luggage and stairs-only hotels a real consideration.

Walkability
Very walkable within the town itself — the center is entirely pedestrian, with everything from dining to shopping reachable on foot. Hotels on the hillsides at the town's edge, like those near Rohari or Drafaki, involve a steeper walk or a short taxi back from the center.

Mykonos Town's two bus stations, Fabrika and the North station, connect to every organized beach on the island, with frequent daytime service to Ornos, Platys Gialos, and Psarou; taxis are limited and hard to flag in peak season, so many hotels arrange transfers directly.

Skip a rental car if you're staying in Mykonos Town and mostly walking, bus-hopping, or taxiing to a couple of organized beaches. Consider one, or an ATV, if you want to reach quieter beaches on the north or east coast on your own schedule — buses cover the main south-coast beaches well, but taxis can be genuinely hard to find in peak season.
