Capitol Hill sits on a rise just east of downtown, across I-5, and has been the social center of Seattle's LGBTQ community since the 1960s and '70s. Broadway and the Pike-Pine corridor are lined with coffee shops, bars, live music venues, and restaurants, alongside historic mansions and Volunteer Park's Olmsted-designed grounds a little further north.

Transportation & practical information

The Capitol Hill light rail station puts downtown and the airport a few minutes away, and it's a walkable (if hilly) 20-25 minutes down into downtown proper. Buses run frequently along Broadway and Pine Street.

Skip the rental car for the areas in this guide. Downtown parking is expensive and often scarce, traffic can back up badly at rush hour, and light rail plus walking cover Downtown, Belltown, Capitol Hill, and Queen Anne well. A car only starts to make sense for day trips out to the mountains or the Olympic Peninsula.
