St. Pauli sits on a bluff above the harbor, best known for the Reeperbahn — Hamburg's famous entertainment strip of bars, clubs, and theaters. There's more to it than nightlife, though: the neighborhood is also home to the fishing-boat-lined Landungsbrücken piers, the Sunday-morning Fischmarkt, and a scrappy, alternative streak that shows up in its street art and its cult football club, FC St. Pauli.

What it's actually like to stay here

Loud and neon-lit around the Reeperbahn itself, especially on weekend nights; calmer and more residential just a block or two off the main strip, with harbor views along Bernhard-Nocht-Straße.
