Sternschanze — usually just called Schanze — is Hamburg's alternative, student-and-creative neighborhood, packed into a compact grid of streets around its old water tower and park. It's known for its left-wing, squatter-scene history, still visible at the Rote Flora cultural center, but these days it's just as much about small boutiques, natural wine bars, and a dense cluster of good, casual restaurants.
