Speicherstadt is the world's largest warehouse district, a UNESCO-listed grid of red-brick buildings and narrow canals built in the 1880s to store coffee, spices, and carpets. It sits right up against HafenCity, a newer waterfront quarter of glass apartment blocks, museums, and plazas built on former docklands over the last two decades — the two flow into each other on foot. The Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg's landmark concert hall, anchors the western edge of HafenCity, its wave-shaped glass roof rising over an old cargo warehouse.
