Kraków's Old Town is the walled medieval core, ringed by the Planty park where the old fortifications once stood. The Main Market Square sits at its center, framed by the Cloth Hall and St. Mary's Basilica, and Grodzka Street leads south from the square to Wawel Hill, where the Royal Castle and Cathedral overlook the Vistula. Unlike Warsaw's Old Town, this one survived the Second World War largely undamaged, so the buildings are the real thing rather than a postwar reconstruction.

What it's actually like to stay here

This is Kraków at its most postcard-familiar — horse-drawn carriages, street musicians, and restaurant terraces spread across the Main Market Square through the day and into the evening. It's also the busiest and most tourist-oriented part of the city; the square and the streets leading off it (Floriańska, Grodzka) stay crowded well into peak season. Step onto a quieter side street, or continue south toward Wawel, and the crowds thin out noticeably.

Very walkable and largely pedestrianized around the Main Market Square. Most of the district's sights sit within a 10-15 minute walk of each other, including the walk south to Wawel Hill, though the cobbled streets and Wawel's hillside approach can be tougher going with luggage or a stroller.
Noise at night
The Main Square and the streets nearest it stay busy with restaurant and bar noise into the evening, especially in summer. Streets further from the square, and the stretch near Wawel, are noticeably quieter.

Transportation & practical information

Kraków has no metro, and the Old Town itself has no tram line running through its pedestrianized core — the nearest stops ring the Planty park just outside it. Kraków Główny, the main train station, sits a short walk from the Old Town's northeastern edge, and trams from there reach Kazimierz and Podgórze directly.

The core of the Old Town is pedestrianized or closed to through traffic, and street parking is scarce and metered. Walking covers everything here, and the tram network just outside the Planty park covers the rest of the city.
