Podgórze sits across the Vistula from Kazimierz, on ground that was its own separate Austrian-era town — granted city rights in 1784 — before being absorbed into Kraków in 1915. From 1941 to 1943 it held the Nazi-era Kraków Ghetto; Ghetto Heroes Square, the surviving fragment of the ghetto wall, and Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, now a branch of the Historical Museum of Kraków, are all within a short walk of each other near the river.

What it's actually like to stay here

Podgórze is quieter and more residential than the Old Town or Kazimierz, with a mix of 19th-century tenements, postwar apartment blocks, and pockets of newer development around Zabłocie. The area right by the river and Ghetto Heroes Square draws a steady flow of visitors on foot, but a few streets back it's an ordinary Kraków neighborhood rather than a tourist district.
