Podgórze sits across the Vistula from Kazimierz, on ground that was its own separate Austrian-era town — granted city rights in 1784 — before being absorbed into Kraków in 1915. From 1941 to 1943 it held the Nazi-era Kraków Ghetto; Ghetto Heroes Square, the surviving fragment of the ghetto wall, and Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, now a branch of the Historical Museum of Kraków, are all within a short walk of each other near the river.

What it's actually like to stay here

Podgórze is quieter and more residential than the Old Town or Kazimierz, with a mix of 19th-century tenements, postwar apartment blocks, and pockets of newer development around Zabłocie. The area right by the river and Ghetto Heroes Square draws a steady flow of visitors on foot, but a few streets back it's an ordinary Kraków neighborhood rather than a tourist district.

Stay here if visiting Schindler's Factory and the ghetto memorial sites is a priority, or if you want a calmer, more local, generally less expensive base within walking distance of Kazimierz and the river.

Stay elsewhere if

If you want to walk out the door onto the Main Market Square, or you'd rather be surrounded by restaurants and nightlife than a residential neighborhood, the Old Town or Kazimierz will suit you better.

The main sights — Ghetto Heroes Square, the ghetto wall fragment, and Schindler's Factory — sit within about a 10-15 minute walk of each other near the river. It's a further 15-20 minute walk, or a couple of tram stops, back into Kazimierz and the Old Town.
Noise at night
Generally quiet, especially compared to Kazimierz or the Old Town — this is a residential district first. The streets right along the main roads and tram lines carry more traffic noise than the quieter interior blocks.

Transportation & practical information

Trams (lines including 3, 9, 24, and 50) cross the Grunwaldzki and Piłsudski bridges from Kazimierz and stop right at Ghetto Heroes Square, making the crossing quick even on foot.

The Old Town is largely pedestrianized and street parking in the center is limited and metered, so a car adds cost without adding convenience. The tram network reaches all the central districts, including across the river to Podgórze, and day trips to Auschwitz-Birkenau or the Wieliczka Salt Mine run as organized coach or minibus tours that don't need a rental car either.
