Capitol Hill is a neighborhood of brick rowhouses and tree-lined streets built around the U.S. Capitol itself, with the Library of Congress and Supreme Court a few blocks away and Eastern Market's produce stalls and food vendors anchoring the neighborhood's social life on weekends. It's quieter and more residential than Penn Quarter, while still putting you within walking distance of the Capitol grounds and the east end of the National Mall.

Residential and small-town by D.C. standards — rowhouses, families, and Hill staffers during the week, with Eastern Market drawing a weekend crowd for its farmers' market and flea market stalls.

Transportation & practical information

The Capitol South and Eastern Market Metro stations, on the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines, serve the neighborhood, and Union Station — with Amtrak, MARC, and VRE trains — is a short walk or Metro ride away.

Skip the rental car. Parking downtown is expensive and limited, traffic can be heavy, and the Metro, bus network, and walking cover the central neighborhoods well — Georgetown, which has no Metro stop, is still an easy bus ride or a 20-minute walk from Dupont Circle.
