Where to Stay in The Loop, Chicago

The Loop is Chicago's downtown core, named for the elevated 'L' tracks that circle it. It's home to the Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park and Cloud Gate ('The Bean'), the theater district around State Street, and a wall of skyscrapers along the Chicago River. It's also the city's biggest business district, so it's busiest on weekdays.

What it's actually like to stay here

Energetic and dense on weekdays, with office workers, tourists, and the elevated trains rattling overhead. Evenings and weekends are quieter on the office blocks but stay lively around the theaters, Millennium Park, and the Riverwalk.

Best for first-time visitors and architecture fans who want the classic Chicago sights — the Art Institute, Millennium Park, the river, the skyline — within walking distance, and for anyone catching a show in the theater district.

Stay elsewhere if

Consider another neighborhood if you want a quieter, more residential feel at night, or if you're not planning to spend much time downtown — the Loop empties out on weekday evenings once the office towers close.

Transportation & practical information

Multiple 'L' lines converge here, plus buses and Metra commuter trains at Union Station and Millennium Station. It's an easy walk or short ride to River North, the Magnificent Mile, or the Gold Coast.

Skip the rental car if you're staying downtown. Downtown traffic is heavy, parking is expensive, and the 'L' and rideshare cover everything here faster and cheaper.
