The Gold Coast is Chicago's grandest historic residential district, developed from 1882 onward by Potter Palmer and other wealthy Chicagoans. Astor Street's row of 19th-century mansions is still intact, and the neighborhood runs right up against Lake Michigan and Oak Street Beach, just north of the Magnificent Mile's shops and hotels.

What it's actually like to stay here

Quiet, leafy, and residential, especially on the side streets away from Michigan Avenue and State Street — a noticeably calmer pace than the Loop or River North, with upscale boutiques and restaurants rather than big chains.

Transportation & practical information
