Where to Stay in De Pijp, Amsterdam

De Pijp is Amsterdam's most densely populated neighborhood, a former working-class district south of the Canal Ring that's since become one of the city's most diverse and food-focused areas. Its spine is Albert Cuypstraat, home to the Albert Cuyp Market, the country's largest daytime street market, running six days a week. The Heineken Experience, housed in the brand's original 19th-century brewery, sits at its northern edge, and Sarphatipark offers a quieter green break a few streets over.

What it's actually like to stay here

Lively, dense, and a little scruffy in the best way — narrow 19th-century streets packed with restaurants, coffee bars, and small shops covering dozens of cuisines. It has more of a lived-in, everyday-Amsterdam feel than the postcard streets of the Canal Ring.

Stay here if

Best for travelers who want a genuine, less touristy slice of the city, with some of Amsterdam's best casual food and nightlife and generally lower hotel prices than the center.

Stay elsewhere if

Consider Centrum instead if being within a few minutes of the Canal Ring's major sights matters more than atmosphere — De Pijp is a solid 20–25 minute walk, or a short tram ride, from Dam Square and the Anne Frank House.

Transportation & practical information

Tram lines 3, 4, and 12 and the Noord/Zuidlijn metro's De Pijp station connect the neighborhood to Centraal Station and the Museum Quarter in a few minutes.

Skip a rental car if you're staying anywhere near the center. Streets inside the Canal Ring are narrow, one-way, and shared with heavy bike traffic; parking is scarce and expensive, and much of the historic core has restricted vehicle access. Trains cover day trips to other Dutch cities faster and more easily than driving.
