Centrum is Amsterdam's historic core, taking in Dam Square, the Royal Palace, and the innermost stretch of the 17th-century Canal Ring. It's the most central place to stay in the city — the Anne Frank House, the Nine Streets shopping district, and canal-cruise docks are all a short walk away. The Red Light District (De Wallen), one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam, sits at its eastern edge.

Transportation & practical information

Amsterdam Centraal station — the hub for trains, trams, the metro, and the airport express — sits at Centrum's northern edge, putting most of the area within a 10–15 minute walk of it. Tram lines run along the main routes for anyone who'd rather not walk.

Skip a rental car if you're staying anywhere near the center. Streets inside the Canal Ring are narrow, one-way, and shared with heavy bike traffic; parking is scarce and expensive, and much of the historic core has restricted vehicle access. Trains cover day trips to other Dutch cities faster and more easily than driving.
