Where to Stay in Colva and Benaulim, Goa

Colva and Benaulim are two beach villages on the same stretch of South Goa coast, a couple of kilometers apart. Colva is South Goa's oldest and largest beach resort town, a former fishing village and 1960s hippie hangout that grew into a full tourist town from the 1980s on. Benaulim, just south, is quieter and more residential, with its own long sandy beach and village character.

What it's actually like to stay here

Slower and more low-key than North Goa's beach towns. Colva has a small, busy village core near the beach with shacks, restaurants, and souvenir stalls; Benaulim is more spread out and residential, with paddy fields and coconut groves between the village and the sand.

Stay here if

Best for families and travelers who want a wide, easy beach with a calmer pace than North Goa, plus a straightforward choice of mid-range beach hotels.

Stay elsewhere if

Consider Calangute-Baga or Candolim instead if North Goa's livelier nightlife and denser cluster of bars within walking distance matter more to you than a calmer stay.

Walkability
The beach itself is wide and walkable for long stretches, and Colva's small village center is walkable on its own. Getting between Colva and Benaulim, or reaching restaurants set back from the beach, is easier with a scooter or taxi.
Noise at night
Quieter after dark than North Goa's party beaches, though Colva's beachfront has some bars and shacks that keep music going into the evening. Benaulim is noticeably calmer and more residential.

Transportation & practical information

Margao, South Goa's main town and rail hub, is about 15 minutes away by taxi or bus. A scooter or taxi is the easiest way to reach other beaches or explore inland; local buses also run between Margao and Colva.

A rented scooter or car is genuinely useful in Goa, unlike the other cities in this guide, since the beach towns are spread out and public transport is limited. Ride-hailing apps and taxis work fine if you'd rather not drive yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is Colva or Benaulim better for a family with kids?
Both work well. Colva has more restaurants and a slightly livelier waterfront, while Benaulim is quieter and more residential. Many family-friendly hotels sit close enough to both.
How far is Colva from Benaulim, and can I walk between them?
They're roughly 2km apart along the same beach. Some visitors walk along the sand, especially at low tide, but a scooter or taxi covers the trip in just a few minutes.
