Fira is Santorini's capital and its most central village, strung along the caldera rim above the Old Port. It has the island's densest concentration of restaurants, jewelry and souvenir shops, bars, and the main bus station, which connects to Oia, Kamari, and the rest of the island. The Three Bells of Fira, a blue-domed church with a distinctive triple bell tower, sits on the caldera edge and is one of the most photographed spots on the island. A cable car (and a centuries-old donkey and mule path alongside it) connects the town to the Old Port below, where cruise tenders dock.

What it's actually like to stay here

Busy and commercial by day, with cliffside cafés and jewelry shops packed along the caldera-edge walkway. It's the liveliest village on the island after dark — restaurants stay open later than elsewhere, and Fira has Santorini's main concentration of bars and cocktail lounges, some with a late-night scene that continues well past midnight.

Walkable within the village, but the caldera-edge lanes are narrow, stepped, and often crowded at sunset. Many hotels sit partway down the cliff face, reached by their own flights of stairs — ask about step count and whether an elevator is available if mobility is a concern.

Transportation & practical information

Fira's central bus station runs KTEL routes to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, the airport, and Athinios port. A cable car connects the caldera rim to the Old Port below in about three minutes; a stepped mule path runs alongside it for those who'd rather walk (or ride a donkey) down.

Skip a rental car if you're staying in one caldera village and mostly walking, bus-hopping, or taxiing to a couple of others. Consider one if you want to reach Akrotiri, Ancient Thera, wineries, or multiple beaches on your own schedule — buses run the main routes but not always frequently, and taxis can be hard to flag down in peak season.
