Imerovigli sits on the highest point of the caldera rim, a small village a 20–30 minute walk (or short bus ride) north of Fira. It's built around Skaros Rock, a fortified promontory that juts out into the caldera below the village and was Santorini's main stronghold before Fira grew into the island's capital. Imerovigli has none of Fira's shops or Oia's crowds — its handful of streets are mostly hotels, a few tavernas, and quiet caldera-view terraces, which is exactly the draw for visitors who want the classic Santorini view without the foot traffic.

What it's actually like to stay here

Quiet and residential at almost any hour. There's no real commercial strip — visitors here are mostly hotel guests, and evenings are spent on private terraces or at the small handful of restaurants rather than out walking the village.

Transportation & practical information

Buses run between Imerovigli and Fira's central station roughly every 30–60 minutes; the caldera-edge footpath also connects the two villages directly for those who'd rather walk.

Skip a rental car if you're staying in one caldera village and mostly walking, bus-hopping, or taxiing to a couple of others. Consider one if you want to reach Akrotiri, Ancient Thera, wineries, or multiple beaches on your own schedule — buses run the main routes but not always frequently, and taxis can be hard to flag down in peak season.
