Montmartre occupies the hill in Paris's 18th arrondissement, topped by the white domes of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, completed in 1914. It's set apart from the rest of the city both by its height — the highest natural point in Paris — and by its village-like layout of steep, winding streets. Place du Tertre, a square still worked by portrait artists, sits just behind the basilica, and the Moulin Rouge and Pigalle's nightlife are down at the bottom of the hill.

What it's actually like to stay here

Villagey and a little separate from the rest of Paris, with a strong artistic history that's still visible around Place du Tertre. It's genuinely touristy near the basilica and the square, especially by day, but the quieter residential streets a few blocks back keep more of a neighborhood feel. Pigalle, at the foot of the hill, adds a different, livelier nightlife scene after dark.

Good for couples after a romantic, distinctive base with panoramic views over Paris, and for architecture or art lovers drawn to the basilica and Montmartre's artistic history.

Stay elsewhere if

Anyone with mobility issues, heavy luggage, or young kids in strollers should think twice — the hill means steep streets and a lot of stairs. It's also farther from the Louvre, Notre-Dame, and other central sights than the other picks here, so it suits a slower trip better than a first visit built around packing in landmarks.

Walkability
Charming but genuinely hilly, with steep streets and long staircases throughout — Rue Foyatier alone has 222 steps up to the basilica. A funicular runs alongside it for anyone who'd rather skip the climb, and it accepts a standard metro ticket.
Noise at night
Quiet on the residential streets away from Place du Tertre and the basilica, both of which get busy and noisy with visitors by day. Pigalle, at the base of the hill, is livelier and louder at night thanks to its bars and clubs.

Transportation & practical information

Abbesses (line 12) and Anvers (line 2) are the main metro stations; Abbesses is one of the deepest stations in the network, reached by a spiral staircase or a small lift. The area sits farther from central Paris than the other neighborhoods here, so expect a longer metro ride to reach the Louvre or the Latin Quarter.

Skip a rental car if you're staying anywhere central. Streets in the older arrondissements are narrow and congested, parking is scarce and expensive, and the metro and RER cover the city far more easily than driving. A car only starts to make sense for day trips into the surrounding countryside, and even then the train usually gets you to other major French cities faster.
