The Latin Quarter takes up most of the 5th arrondissement on the Left Bank, just across the Seine from Notre-Dame and Île de la Cité. It takes its name from the Latin once spoken by students at the Sorbonne, founded here in 1257, and the university crowd is still part of the neighborhood's identity. The Panthéon and the Musée de Cluny sit within its narrow medieval streets, and the Jardin du Luxembourg is a short walk to the west.

Transportation & practical information

Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame (metro line 4, RER B and C) and Cluny–La Sorbonne (line 10) both sit in the neighborhood, putting most of it within a short walk of a metro or RER stop.

Skip a rental car if you're staying anywhere central. Streets in the older arrondissements are narrow and congested, parking is scarce and expensive, and the metro and RER cover the city far more easily than driving. A car only starts to make sense for day trips into the surrounding countryside, and even then the train usually gets you to other major French cities faster.
