Le Marais spans Paris's 3rd and 4th arrondissements on the Right Bank, a warren of narrow medieval streets that largely escaped Haussmann's 19th-century renovation. Place des Vosges, the oldest planned square in Paris, anchors its eastern side; Rue des Rosiers, the heart of the historic Jewish quarter, runs through the middle. Notre-Dame is about a 15-minute walk south, and the Louvre a similar walk or a short metro ride west.

What it's actually like to stay here

A mix of centuries-old buildings, independent boutiques, art galleries, and falafel counters, with a genuinely mixed crowd of tourists, longtime residents, and Paris's LGBTQ community, centered especially around Rue Vieille du Temple. Unlike most of Paris, many shops here stay open on Sundays. It feels busy most of the day, and busiest of all on weekend afternoons and evenings.
