Pacific Beach is San Diego's classic beach-town neighborhood: a wide boardwalk running along the sand, surf shops and casual restaurants a block back, and Crystal Pier's white cottages built right out over the water since the 1930s. It's younger and more casual than La Jolla or Coronado, with a boardwalk that gets genuinely busy on warm weekends and a bar scene that picks up after dark.

Transportation & practical information

No trolley reaches Pacific Beach directly; rideshare or a car is the practical way in and out, and it's about a 20-25 minute drive from downtown San Diego. Once you're there, the boardwalk and beach are walkable from most hotels.

You don't need a car within any single neighborhood — the Gaslamp Quarter, La Jolla, Coronado, and Pacific Beach are each walkable once you're there. But San Diego's neighborhoods are spread across a wide area with no direct transit between most of them, so a rental car or regular rideshare use makes covering more than one area far easier.
