International Drive — I-Drive to locals — is an 18 km tourist strip lined with hotels, restaurants, outlet malls, mini golf, dinner shows, and ICON Park, home to the 400-foot Wheel observation wheel. It runs roughly parallel to Interstate 4 between the Orange County Convention Center and Universal Orlando, and it's less a neighborhood than a purpose-built entertainment corridor — but a genuinely useful one if you want a lot of options within reach of your hotel.

What it's actually like to stay here

Bright, busy, and unmistakably built for tourists — big signage, tour buses, families walking between attractions, and a steady mix of chain restaurants and one-off novelties like a upside-down house or a pirate-themed dinner show.

Good for first-time visitors and families who want a huge range of restaurants, attractions, and hotel price points all within a short drive or trolley ride, and for budget-conscious travelers who want more room rate options than Disney or Universal's own resort areas.

Consider another area if you want a quiet, walkable town feel or you're focused on one park cluster (Disney or Universal) and would rather be right at its gates.

Walkability
Uneven — the area around ICON Park has sidewalks and a genuinely walkable cluster of restaurants and attractions, but I-Drive runs about 18 km end to end, so most visitors drive or use the I-Ride Trolley to cover more than a few blocks.
Noise at night
International Drive itself carries steady traffic noise, but most hotels sit set back from the road, and side streets are noticeably quieter at night.

Transportation & practical information

The I-Ride Trolley runs the length of International Drive and is a cheap way to cover longer stretches. Rideshare is the easiest way to reach Universal, SeaWorld, or Disney, and a rental car makes sense if you're planning to visit multiple parks.

A car (or consistent rideshare budget) makes Orlando much easier — International Drive, Lake Buena Vista, and Universal are 15-40 minutes apart by road, and public transit doesn't meaningfully connect them. If you're only doing one park cluster and its on-site or adjacent hotels, you can get by on shuttles and rideshare alone.
